Breif Overview

Drama is part of the Creative and Performing Arts department. We aim to empower young people to become artists with the ability to work in many different ways in improvised, scripted and technical drama and theatre. We use the art form of drama to explore issues relating to the whole curriculum, the students and the world in which we all operate.

The Drama Department has two new fully equipped studios, both with full blackout and rigged lighting. Both sound systems are impressive and the use of these and our other resources is integral to our daily teaching. The Drama and Performing Arts staff are hugely committed to extra-curricular activities and performances which are always performed in the newly refurbished Young Hearts Theatre. The team is responsible for two major college productions a year; one at the end of the Autumn term and the other at the end of the Summer term. Individual departments also put on smaller scale productions throughout the year.

The Drama Department has established strong links with Hull Truck Theatre (offering students regular workshops).

Details of Courses/Qualifications

At Key Stage 3 students follow a mixture of improvised and scripted units of work, setting down a firm foundation of understanding for GCSE Drama.

At Key Stage 4 students who take GCSE Drama are taught technical options of lighting, set design and make-up/masks if available for a section of the course. Students who choose to take BTEC first in Performing Arts are designed to provide a specialist work related qualification that will prepare individuals for employment. Students will take part in practical and technical workshops and theatre visits.
