Brief Overview

We aim to fire students’ curiosity and imagination, moving and inspiring them with the dilemmas, choices and beliefs of people in the past. Students are encouraged to be independent learners and to demonstrate their understanding in a variety of ways.

The History department runs a visit to the World War One Battlefields in France and Belgium bi-annually which is open to all students.

 

Details of Courses/Qualifications

At Key Stage 3, the students are taught in their form groups. They receive one hour of History a week. The students develop a chronological overview through a combination of thematic and depth studies which enables them to make connections within and across different periods and societies. They are encouraged to identify and understand the major events, changes and developments in British, European and world history covering at least the medieval, early modern, industrial and twentieth-century periods.
At Key Stage 4, students receive three hours per week. GCSE History equips students with knowledge and skills that are prized in adult life, enhancing employability and developing an ability to take part in a democratic society. Students follow the Modern World History Syllabus which covers International Relations 1900-1945. Students also develop transferable cross-curricular skills. As they develop their understanding of the nature of historical study; students become confident and questioning individuals, asking and answering important questions, evaluating evidence, identifying and analysing different interpretations of the past, and learning to substantiate any arguments and judgments they make.
